Why fall is one of the best times to get photos taken | Fall family photos - Portland, Oregon
Now that it’s August, I can’t help thinking and talking about fall and fall family photos! It doesn’t help that basically every store has had their fall decor out since mid-July - it’s kind of impossible to ignore! Fall is the most popular time of the year for family photos, and for good reason. Today I am talking about my top 5 reasons why fall is such a great time to get photos taken.
Cooler, more comfortable temperatures
There is nothing better than that crisp fall air. Summer is amazing, but I’m always a little relieved when cooler temps arrive with fall. Most of my photo sessions happen right before sunset, one of the hottest times of the day. During the fall, sessions are more comfortable and nobody is worrying about getting too sweaty!
Beautiful fall colors
There is no prettier time of year here in the Pacific Northwest (in my humble opinion) for fall family photos. The leaves are changing into vivid oranges, yellows and reds - the perfect backdrop for beautiful, breathtaking photos. Speaking of leaves - what other time of year can you play in the leaves? Kids and parents alike love this (or is it just me?), and it can make for some fun photos that you can’t wait to hang on your wall.
Fall outfits - need I say more?
If there is one thing I love more than the fall air, beautiful leaves and pumpkin spice everything, it’s all the fall clothes and accessories. What other time of year can you accessorize with scarves, boots, sweaters and dresses? Not to mention that neutral fall colors that go well with almost anything - including colorful leaves or a more neutral background like a grassy field or trees (because lets be honest both are amazing choices as backdrops for fall photos!).
Fun locations
Whether it’s fall leaves, a big open field or something else, there is never a shortage of locations to take your fall family photos. Some fun options are a nature park, farm, apple picking, pumpkin patch - there are lots of possibilities. The foliage and scenery this time of year are so pretty you really can’t go wrong with what you choose. Locations that are privately owned might require approval for photography, so it’s always good to have your photographer check ahead of time to know which places allow photographers and if there is a fee involved. Check out this blog I wrote about one of my favorite fall photoshoot locations - Champoeg Park in Newberg, Oregon.
Fun fact - you can also have your photos taken at your own house in your yard. Do you have a favorite tree that is just beautiful in the fall? A certain area in your yard or on your property that you love and feel would be great for fall family photos? I love when families want to incorporate their homes into their photos - it has so much meaning and it’s always more comfortable at your own home. Side note: I also do in-home photos which are very relaxed, intimate and amazing (check out this blog to learn more about my in-home sessions if that is more your style).
did someone say christmas cards?
Probably one of the reasons so many people get their photos taken in the fall is - you guessed it - they coincide nicely with getting those Christmas cards ordered! Some of my favorite online shops to order Christmas cards from are Simply to Impress, MPix, and Minted, but there are many more to choose from.
