4 Tips on How to Prepare for Winter Family Photos | Portland Family Photogapher

Booking a family photoshoot in the winter in the Pacific Northwest - not something you would normally think to do right? It’s typically rainy for 7 months straight starting in November and freezing cold. Well, there’s good news! It IS possible to have a successful family photoshoot in the winter here in Oregon. Scroll down to see my top 4 tips on preparing you and your family for a successful and fun experience!

How to prepare for winter family photos tip #1: wear warm clothes (and bring accessories)

Now, this might sound pretty obvious, but it needs to be said. When planning for a winter photoshoot you MUST wear weather appropriate clothes. If you are going to be in the snowy mountains - gloves, hats and even actual snow clothes would be appropriate and very fitting! Layers look amazing in photos (think scarves, hats, fancy gloves). Long trench coats are such a vibe and I can’t get over how amazing they look on this family from my most recent winter photoshoot at Laurelhurst Park here in Portland, Oregon. They were so prepared for the weather (even brought umbrellas which we thankfully didn’t end up needing) and it really helped everyone stay warm and in good spirits on that chilly March afternoon.

How to prepare for winter family photos tip #2: Location, location, location

Did I say location?! It’s super important to do your research and know which locations might be more exposed to weather (think wind, rain) than others. It really does make a difference when you choose a spot where there is ample tree coverage (but not too much or it might be too dark to take photos without a flash) which not only provides protection from the rain but also the wind. Laurelhurst Park in Portland is a great example of somewhere with enough tree coverage but still getting enough light. I also love the winding paths, light posts and pond in the middle of the park - it makes for a great variety of photos!

I know it’s not always possible to choose a location with trees and that’s ok. If you have your heart set on an open field on top of a hill then go for it - just be prepared to use umbrellas if necessary (I actually love photos with umbrellas in the rain!) or get creative with your photographer if it does start to rain.

How to prepare for winter family photos tip #3: Be flexible

Being flexible is huge when you are thinking of scheduling outdoor photos in the winter. Knowing it might start to rain during your session and being ok with that is important. With my sessions, I will reschedule for stormy weather, though light rain is something we can usually work with if we take these steps I’m listing out in this blog!

During this photo session, it did start to rain for a bit (more like sprinkle). The family totally went with the flow and we finished without any issues and a happy family (which is always my goal).

How to prepare for winter family photos tip #4: Prepare ahead of time

This probably should be at the top of the list but I saved it for last to leave you thinking about what you can do to prepare ahead of time for your winter photoshoot. Packing items such as umbrellas, hand warmers, blankets and warm drinks can really help make the experience better if it’s super cold outside. If you have young children, packing some favorite (non-messy) snacks is always a good mood booster idea. In some cases packing a change of clothes might be a good idea as well if the location you are going to is muddy and you have littles who love to run around and get dirty (basically every kid right?!).

The bottom line is the more you prepare and know what to expect the more successful your photoshoot will be! Your photographer will likely have lots of information and suggestions regarding this and you should never hesitate to ask if you have any questions or concerns.
