What to Wear for Spring Cherry Blossom Family Photos

family of 5 walking in the cherry blossom trees

Is there anything that signals spring more than beautiful cherry blossoms? These beautiful blooms are one of my favorites, and I was thrilled to be able to take some photos of this adorable family a couple weeks ago.

Spring is the perfect time to book a cherry blossom photo session, but sometimes choosing the right outfit can prove to be a challenge. I’m here to help take the guess work out of trying to decide what to wear for your spring cherry blossom family photos.

what colors to wear for cherry blossom family photos

Sticking to soft neutrals as well as pastels (light pink looks great with the pink cherry blossoms) is always a good choice when it comes to choosing what color palette to go with. While I highly recommend staying away from dark colors (they can detract from the beauty of the cherry blossoms) throwing some navy (as seen in these photos) can add a pop of color and contrasts well with the pink. Light grays, tan or khaki can complete look and bring everything together,

what should mom wear for cherry blossom photos?

Anything that screams spring is a winner in my book. Usually for women that will be a long flowy dress or skirt paired with a jean jacket (for layering) or a fun hat like this one from Amazon. Don’t be afraid to add a floral patterned skirt or scarf to bring it up a notch! Just make sure you are comfortable in what you are wearing (I know I am always saying this but it’s so true - it will show in your photos if you are uncomfortable).

One local shop, Maple Boutique, here in Sherwood, Oregon always has a great selection of in-season clothing, and the shop is beautifully designed and well laid out. You could also check out Little Bird Boutique in Newberg, Oregon which has equally adorable clothing and other fun items to shop for in addition to clothing.

what should dad wear for cherry blossom photos?

Dad’s outfit can range from casual (just not too casual) to dressy - both looks work. Jeans or nice pants with a Henley t-shirt or button down are flattering and will work great for your cherry blossom family photos. Just like with mom, make sure dad is comfortable in what he is wearing and that clothing fits appropriately (not too small or too big). Usually dads are happy to go with the flow so you can choose everyone else’s outfits first and then add in whatever color you still need to complete the look with his shirt and/or pants.

what should kids wear for cherry blossom photos?

I don’t think there is anything more adorable than kids dressed for spring in sundresses, bowties, and button ups (you can even throw a sweater vest in there and still have the spring vibe going (see below photo)). Choose clothing they are comfortable in that still fit into your color scheme. These little boys are wearing clothing from Old Navy, and so are their older sisters. If you are looking for a long, flowy dress for your daughter I highly recommend checking out Joyfolie - their dresses are beautiful and amazing quality. I actually have a handful of their dresses in my client closet just waiting to be worn! One other thing I always like to recommend to my families is to stay away from athletic shoes as they tend to really stand out and are distracting in photos.

one last tip when planning for your spring cherry blossom family photos:

Come prepared for cold weather! My cherry blossom sessions take place in the morning in order to take advantage of the best light, which means cooler temps (one of the downsides of Oregon in April). I highly recommend bringing layers (sweaters, jean jackets, etc.) to be able to take on and off throughout the session. You can even bring a heavy jacket for your child to put on to warm up when they aren’t being photographed. I always want to make sure everyone in the family is comfortable and happy during your session so taking these steps will help to ensure that happens.
